Applied Geochemistry

Department of Applied Geochemistry

Department of Applied Geochemistry

Part of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences cluster of four departments

Year of establishment: 1991

Osmania University created a platform for the subject of Applied Geochemistry with a Collaboration Program in Applied Geochemistry with the Geological Survey of India and the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Several scientific programs were undertaken in Andhra Pradesh, India in the collaboration program to train the project personnel in field and laboratory aspects.

India is blessed with rich mineral resources. Geochemical exploration is one of the best modern tools for exploring new potential areas to meet the future requirements of our country. Hence a need was felt to promote Applied Geochemistry as a subject in Osmania University. As the modern geochemical laboratory and trained personnel were available, Osmania University created the Department of Applied Geochemistry in October, 1991 and subsequently a two year (four semesters) M.Sc. Applied Geochemistry course was started apart from already existing one year course of P.G. Diploma/M.Sc. (Tech) Applied Geochemistry.

COMPETENCY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The faculty has ample experience in Mineral exploration, Environmental Geochemistry, Hydro grochemistry apart from their regular teaching profession. The Department is well equipped with modern analytical facilities to take-up various research activities. The department is continuously receiving research grants through various projects from different funding agencies.

UGC has sanctioned Rs. 30.00 lakhs to the department for strengthening of infrastructure under Basic Scientific Research, and also research fellowships for Meritorious Students in Applied Geochemistry. The Department has also received FIST grants for Laboratory Development.
